Filipinos have a penchant for setting world records, especially those acknowledged by London-based Guinness World Records.

Publicity stunts or not, these world records were initiated by companies, schools, churches, local government units, organizations and institutions with the aim of proving something—that they could accomplish feats considered the best on the planet.

Here are some of the record-shattering events accomplished in the Philippines over the past 10 years.

 

World tree-planting record

Mindanao set a new world record for the most trees planted in an hour, with 2.29 million seedlings sown as part of a national forestation program in 2014, according to Agence France-Presse.

The feat broke the old record of 1.9 million trees planted in India on August 15, 2011.

“The most trees planted simultaneously at multiple locations is 2,294,629, achieved by 122,168 participants in an event organized by TreeVolution: Greening MindaNOW (Philippines) at 29 locations across the Philippines on 26 September 2014,” the Guinness World Records said.

The trees were planted in six different areas in Mindanao by 122,168 people including government employees, students and volunteers in 29 locations.

TreeVolution: Greening MindaNOW was spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA).

More than 4 million seedlings were actually planted during the event, but only 2.29 million were reportedly counted because of the stringent verification process of the Guinness committee.

The event saw the planting of rubber, cacao, coffee, timber and mahogany trees, as well as a range of fruit trees and other species indigenous to the Philippines.

 

World's largest art class

The Philippines broke the record for the World’s Largest Art Lesson attended by 16,692 students from 32 secondary schools in Quezon City on February 24, 2018, according to BusinessMirror.

The feat surpassed India's record where 14,135 people gathers for the same purpose in 2014.

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Philippines recorded a total of 16,692 Filipino participants in a 45-minute art lesson at Quezon Memorial Circle in Diliman, Quezon City.

Officially called “PINASayang Sining,” the event was organized by Expressions Stationery Shop Inc.

 

Largest lantern parade

San Jose Del Monte City in Bulacan set a Guinness World Record for the Largest Lantern Parade with a14,173 people bearing eco-friendly lanterns while marching through the streets of the city to celebrate the “2nd Tanglawan Festival” on September 19, 2017, according to Manila Bulletin.

The parade used lanterns made from recycled soda and beer cans, all made by the participants by hand. The feat surpassed the one in Singapore on September 14, 2008 with 10,568 participants.

 

Hamburger eating competition

Filipinos Kelvin “Zarkman” Medina and Ricardo “Rix Terabite” Francisco competed for the title most hamburgers eaten in one minute, according to Guinness World Records.

Terabite, 24, proved he was the hungriest for the record and managed to consume a record-breaking five 107-gram patties in 60 seconds on March 29, 2017.

Zarkman, however, still holds the record for fastest time to eat a 12" pizza which he won in a previous contest.

Formerly, the record for most hamburgers eaten in a minute was held by multiple record-breaking competitive eater Peter Czerwinski, aka “Furious Pete”, who ate four hamburgers in the time slot.

 

Largest cha-cha dance event

Kidapawan City organized the largest number of performers dancing Cha-Cha-Cha in 2016, besting previous holder Singapore, according to GMA News.

Some 14, 275 participants composed mostly of students from the elementary, high school, and college, village officials, government employees, as well as senior citizens danced along the three-kilometer stretch of the city highway for a five-minute cha-cha number on August 30, 2016.

This surpassed Singapore’s record of 3,379 performers dancing the Cha-Cha-Cha.

 

Largest sentence formed by humans

University of Santo Tomas broke the world record on September 29, 2017 when 16,729 students formed the largest human sentence, according to GMA News.

The attempt was a part of UST's celebration of the National Teachers' Month.

On March 9, 2011, UST also set a world record for the world’s largest human cross when 13,266 participants joined.

 

Largest rice cake mosaic

Calasiao, Pangasinan formed the largest rice cake mosaic on December 8, 2017 to highlight the celebration of “Puto Festival”, according to Manila Bulletin.

About 100 residents baked more than 200-square-meter rice cake mosaic at the town plaza to beat Japan's old record of 113.96 square meter rice ball mosaic in March 2013.

 

Most mentos and soda fountain

Around 2,865 students from five universities took part in breaking the record for the largest simultaneous soda geysers, through combination of mentos and soda at SM Mall of Asia Complex on October 17, 2010.

This was later topped by Mexico which increased the number of mentos and soda fountains to 4,334 on November 15, 2014, according to Guinness World Records.

 

Most fireworks in 30 seconds

Pyroworks International Inc. (Philippines) launched 125,801 firework rockets on May 8, 2010 at the South Road Properties in Cebu to break the record of 56,405 rockets launched in 30 seconds during the 10th British Firework Championship in Plymouth on August 16, 2006, according to Guinness World Records.

 

Largest church choir

About 21,262 members of Iglesia Ni Cristo formed the largest church choir at Philippine Arena on May 22, 2016, according to Guinness World Records.

The choir collectively sang 3 hymns, accompanied by an organ.

 

Most watched biographical film

Historical-biographical film “Felix Manalo” set two new Guinness World Records in October 2015

The film, which dramatizes the life of the first Executive Minister of the Iglesia Ni Cristo, was shown to a record-breaking 43,624 people at The Philippine Arena in Cuidad de Victoria.

The screening set new records for largest audience at a film premiere and largest attendance at a film screening.

 

Super-sized human emoji sets
A mass of 8,018 people gathered together to form the largest human smiley at Rizal Park in Manaila in June 2015, according to Guinness World Records.

AIM Global practically doubled the size of the 4,047 person smiley created by Smile Hypermarket earlier in the year and significantly raised the bar.

 

Largest zumba class workout

Mandaluyong City hosted the world's largest zumba class ever attempted, with 12,975 energetic participants in attendance on July 22, 2015, according to Guinness World Records.

This surpassed the previous record set by Cebu City in October 2014 with 8,232 participants.

 

Largest display of origami letters

Lucky Chinatown, a shopping mall in Manila, unveiled the largest display of origami lanterns on October 8, 2015, according to Guinness World Records.

Made out of 19,552 individual red and yellow paper cubes, the origami display was designed to embody power, strength and good luck.

 

World’s largest road safety lesson

Vehicle manufacturer Suzuki Philippines Inc. set a Guinness World Records title at the World Trade Center in Manila in March 2017 when 4,178 Suzuki motorbike fans took part in the largest road safety lesson.

The event was held to celebrate the Japanese multinational corporation‘s Raider R150 motorcycle, the ‘Underbone King’. More than 96 clubs attended the event and thousands of riders got involved with the activities throughout the day.

It broked the previous record for the largest road safety lesson set by India with 2,700 participants in January 2017.

 

Largest flaming image

Some 11,336 people in Iloilo City took part in an illuminating event on April 15, 2014, lighting 56,680 candles to set a new record for the largest flaming image, according to Guinness World Records.

Filipinos together with visitors from Thailand and several other countries joined together to help light-up the image in a 166m x 303m field in Iloilo City.

 

Most people washing dishes

Procter & Gamble (P&G) set a new Guinness World Record at the World Trade Center in Manila, where 300 participants achieved the record for the most people washing dishes simultaneously, using Joy dishwashing liquid in November 2016.

The participants washed a staggering total of 2,017 plates.

 

Largest dance fitness class

Balanga City in Bataan province held the largest dance fitness class ever, where 16,218 people participated in March 2016, according to Guinness World Records.

 

Largest human image of an anchor

Angkla Party-List and the University of Antique recently set a record for the largest human image of an anchor, in celebration of the school’s 62nd foundation day and as a way of honoring Filipino seafarers

in June 2016, according to Guiness World Records.

Some 6,000 people, mostly maritime students at the university as well as members of the public, participated in the event.

 

Largest skateboard parade

Some 1,108 participants set the record for the largest skateboard parade organized by DC Shoes Philippines (Philippines) in Manila on June 21, 2017, according to Guinness World Records.

 

Largest carpentry lesson

Around 525 people participated in the largest carpentry lesson organized by Nestle Philippines Inc. (Philippines) at the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila on January 28, 2011. The lesson taught students how to construct their own tables and over 100 were built during the event, according to Guinness World Records.

 

Largest wooden coat hanger

The largest wooden coathanger is 15.24 m (50 ft) long and was created by H&M Philippines (Philippines) in Cebu City on November 27, 2015, according to Guinness World Records.

The coathanger was built to commemorate H&M's first store opening in Cebu City.

 

Longest massage chain

About 1,600 people formed the longest massage chain in Boracay on May 16, 2014 at an event organized by The Philippine Association of Licensed Massage Therapists (Philippines) on May 16, 2014, according to a report by Guinness World Records.

 

Most participants in a racing event

About 116,086 joined the Run for the Pasig River in Manila on October 10, 2010. The event consisted of three races: 3 km (1.86 mi), 5 km (3.11 mi), and 10 km (6.21 mi) runs all occurring simultaneously on different routes through the city before converging at the end of each circuit, according to Guinness World Records.

 

Longest parade of tricycles

Cauayan City in Isabela province displaced Beijing, China, as the world record holder in having the longest parade of motorcycles with sidecars or tricycles in April 2015, according to Rappler.

About 681 tricycles completed the parade – or more than double the 317 motorcycles with sidecars of previous record-holder Beijing.

The city of Cauayan partnered with local motorcycle dealer Ropali Motorcycles, Honda Motors and civic organization History to pull off the feat.
