The DanceSport Team Cebu City (DTCC) has received the Guinness World Records certificate for being the "largest dance class" globally and surpassing the record earlier set by Hungary.

Edward Hayco, DTCC chairperson, said the promotion and popularization of Dancesport is aimed to attract sports tourism in Cebu and make the province the so-called dancing capital of the Philippines.   Part of the group's vision, along with the local government of the province, is to promote Cebu as the premier tourism destination in the country and in Asia.

As a volunteer activity, it has transformed the lives of thousands of street kids from different barangays, out of school youth and village kids here by developing their self-esteem and confidence. They broke the record of Hungary by having 7,770 dancesport class participants held at the Cebu City Sports Center on June 27, 2009.

"It becomes an alternative activity to lead kids away from drugs and petty crimes, and to be a source of strength and character building for the youth," Hayco said.

Hayco said the group's students and workshop participants are mostly youth aged five years old to 25 years old.

"We believe that they can make a difference in our country's future. If you could only see the students, ages five to 15 who come from underprivileged families, dancing with the skill and passion of a true athlete clad in self-made costumes and borrowed shoes two sizes bigger," Hayco noted.

In the national and international competitions since 2003, the team has proudly garnered 114 golds, 95 silvers and 86 bronze medals. They also participated in the Southeast Asian Games.
